Katie Smith is an award-winning bricklayer.
Katie is joining the panel of TradieLadies for TradesTalk Live at the Ricoh Arena this September, as part of an event celebrating women in the trades. Katie has been in the trade for three years and finished her apprenticeship in May 2019. She says: “I chose to be bricklayer for a few reasons. I ‘d had quite a few jobs that I didn’t get on with, mainly down to my over active mind and hyperactivity. I did a tester session at Stephensons College and I instantly knew bricklaying was for me. It also runs in my family – my great grandfather was a master bricklayer and my grandfather also a bricklayer, so it seems only fair to carry that on, right?”
For Katie, the best part of being a bricklayer is “the best the sense of achievement you feel when you step back from something you’ve built and think ‘I’ve built that’. I don’t like to rush my work and always believe in quality over quantity and for that reason.. The end result, has to be the best part of my job!”
